Nagqu Overview

Nagqu(also spelled Nagchu)is located in the northern region of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Its name is derived from the river(of the same name), which is the northern most part of the Nujiang river. The river was also referred to as the black river in the past.

The region is over 300,000 sq km and has a population of over 370,000 people. It is broken up into 10 counties, along with a special district area. The largest region of Tibet, it has recently grown into an economic and political center of northern Tibet.

The climate, as to be be expected is harsh. The region can experience very cold temperatures and dry air. Sandstorms are prevalent and travelers should be careful. Always check the forecast before heading out of the urban areas.

The area is highlited by grassland plateaus and towering mountains in the background. The splendid scenary adds to the travelers` list of things to see. Since the region is rather large, settle in one area and focus on the sites there.

Events and places that are worth seeing include the Shodain Monastery, located in Nagchu county. There is also a special horse race each year. Many different festivities are also held during the event. Among the list of must sees in Tibet are Namco Lake. The eastern part of the region has some points worth mentioning including the Painpin forest and the Dodoga Skull Wall. The Hor Kings Palace Ruins and Lupu and Bacang Monasteries are also interesting sites. South of Nagqu county one can find the Zoima Canyon which is another scenic spot worth viewing.
