Favorable location and historical significance endow the Shannan region with not only a persisting growth in its economy but great convenience in transportation as well. In 1966, the first airport of Tibet was moved from Damxung to Gonggar County, allowing direct access to Shannan from other places in China.
From Lhasa (170km, about 2.5 hour drive)
Coaches and minibuses to Tsedang assemble in Lhasa Coach Station providing daily services. The usual price is CNY 27-30 per person while luxury vehicles charges a little more. Chartering a Santana often costs around CNY 200. The on-the-way scenery of the Yarlung Tsangpo River is breathtaking and the road condition is fairly satisfactory. The direct pilgrim bus to Samye Monastery leaves around 06:30am from Jokhang Square.
From Gonggar Airport (100KM, 1.5hour drive)
Presently there are direct flights from Beijing, Chengdu, Xian, Kunming, Xining and Bangda Airports, as well as Katmandu to Gonggar Airport. The route of Gonggar-Tsedang (sightseeing in Shannan)-Lhasa is popularly accepted by many travelers.
In-Shannan Travel
There are regular buses from Tsedang to such nearby scenic spots as the Samye Monastery, Trandruk Monastery, YumbuLagang and the tombs of Tibetan Kings, charging no more than CNY 5 per person. Traveling to Yamdrok-tso firstly requires a coach to Nhagartse County, the service of which can be found in Shannan Coach Station. Convenient rental services of 4WD, jeeps, bicycles, tricycles and taxis in the Town of Tsedang provide a wide variety transportation. In fact, cycling or hiking would be a considerably good choice for a nearby sightseeing.
