The mountain ringed glacier basin is one of the most spectacular settings in the Himalayas known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. The beauty of a trek to this high amphitheater introduces us not any the full and glorious spectrum of Nepal's scenery, but also from subtropical farmlands to snow-capped glaciers. The sanctuary lies at 13,000 feet, encircled by giants such as Annapurna I (26,545'), Gangapurna, and Machapuchare, a sacred peak whose unclimbed summit remains forbidden to climbers. Our 11-day trek includes the Modi Khola River on ancient footpaths among steeply terraced rice paddies and through the timeless villages of Nepal's Gurungs. The snowy Annapurnas delight us along the way and views of the 'fishtail' spire of Machapuchare, and once inside this photogenic mountain sanctuary, we have two~three days to explore its glacier wilds from our camp at Annapurna South Base Camp.
